We must move forward-resolutely- on low carbon/no carbon transportation. This includes, of course urgent emphasis on solar, wind, and geothermal sources, and a weaning away from petroleum, coal, and natural gas extraction.
Accordingly we must fundamentally change the methods we use to move people and goods. The expanding use of electric vehicles is a good start. But we also must put new and heavy emphasis on railroad use for both passengers and freight. Trains are far less carbon hungry than cars and trucks. Propeller planes consume less fuel than jets, which makes them a useful and potentially more cost-effective move for regional flights.
I think it is essential that we move quickly to decentralize our electricity infrastructure. It has become a profound national security issue, given their inherent hardware and software vulnerabilities. Our massive and linked grid systems are prime targets for hackers and saboteurs. Regional and local power distribution systems will be better suited to withstand attacks.
Maintaining our systems of dams and locks is crucial. In terms of fuel usage, nothing moves grain and other bulk goods more efficiently and effectively than barges.
