My Approach to Education

Initiatives that serve as the foundation of my approach to Education:

  • The Quality of Our Schools Should Not be Functions of Zip Codes: Very generally speaking, prosperous communities tend to have larger property tax bases , and as a result, good to excellent schools. Poorer areas have less to draw upon, and accordingly, have middling to poor schools. We must blunt the financial disparities of "have" and "have not" school districts. Private and charter schools should not be funded through tax deductions or vouchers.

  • Recruit and retain more teachers of color: The Learning Policy Institute revealed that students of color have better academic performance, improved graduation rates, and are more likely to attend college when they are taught of teachers of color. Research from the report also shows the added insight that "all students, regardless of race, report feeling cared for and academically challenged by teachers of color."

  • Expand the Availability of School-Based and Mobile Clinics: These clinics should offer access to vaccinations, dental and vision checks, and other preventative services. The clinics should also collaborate with community health centers and public health clinics to offer necessary support for teaching healthy lifestyle habits, such as nutrition and exercise. Support programs and therapies for students with disabilities should also be provided.

  • Establish Universal School Lunch Programs: This should be offered to all students without regard to income and should include healthy food options.

  • Expand Educational Opportunities: Offer more pre-school and kindergarten programs, extend child tax credits, and elevate the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) nutrition program and CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program). Community college should also be publicly supported and offered tuition-free for those who want extend education beyond high school, but cannot afford to attend a 4-year university after receiving their diploma.
