Darin LaHood is Posturing by Tying the SAVE Act to Federal Funding. Mitch McConnell Calls It “Politically Beyond Stupid.”
Count Mr. LaHood as being among the sycophants.
Yesterday evening, Illinois Representative Darin LaHood (R-16) voted to combine short-term funding for keeping the federal government open with a poison pill called the SAVE (“Safeguard American Voter Eligibility”) Act.
Count Mr. LaHood as being among the sycophants who are willing to push federal funding to the brink in order to score cheap political points with a fabricated and phony issue.
The SAVE Act – which purports to require proof of citizenship in order to vote -- is wholly unnecessary. According to the League of Women Voters: “...(O)ur laws already bar non-citizen voting and prevent illegal registration and voting. False claims about non-citizens voting in federal and state elections are a pretext for undermining our access to vote, and they spread disinformation about voting.” (1)
Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell says: “My only observation about this whole discussion is the one thing you cannot have is a government shutdown. It would be politically beyond stupid for us to do that right before the election, because certainly we’d get the blame.” (2)
